Building a Wearable Simon Game With Conductive Fabric
If you've ever wanted to turn a classic memory game into something you can actually wear, this week's spotlight is for you: the Wearable Simon Game Video Kit. This build centers on an ESP32, a set of WS2812B addressable LEDs for the classic red/blue/green/yellow sequence, and conductive fabric pads sewn directly into the wearable so your taps register as real switch input — no bulky buttons required. Why it's a genuinely good project to learn from
I designed the Simon Game build around three ideas I come back to constantly when I'm teaching: state machines, input debouncing, and timing. The game logic has to track an increasingly long sequence, listen for the right input at the right moment, and forgive a slightly-too-slow tap without losing the plot. That's a compact, satisfying way to practice concepts that show up in almost every interactive project you'll ever build — long after you've moved on from Simon Says.
And because the input is conductive fabric instead of a mechanical button, you also get a hands-on lesson in why e-textile connections behave differently: resistance changes with pressure and contact area, so your debounce logic needs a bit more tolerance than it would with a clean digital switch. It's a small wrinkle that teaches a big lesson.
How you'd actually use this
A few ways I'd put this kit to work beyond 'because it's fun' (though it is genuinely fun):
- Classroom or workshop demo: it's a self-contained way to show state machines and sensor debouncing without a lecture slide in sight.
