Silver vs Copper vs Nickel: How to Choose the Right Conductive Fabric for Your Project
So you need conductive fabric — but which one? Silver, copper, nickel... they all conduct electricity, so does it even matter?
It matters a lot. The right fabric depends on whether it will touch skin, whether it needs to stretch, whether you're making a touch sensor or shielding a signal, and how long you need it to last. Here's the honest breakdown, based on fabrics we've personally tested and use in our own builds.

Silver conductive fabric: the skin-friendly all-star
Silver-plated fabrics are the premium option, and for wearables they're usually worth it.

Why choose silver:
- Lowest resistance. Fabrics like Shieldex® Balingen come in under 0.6 ohms per square — excellent for sensing applications where signal quality matters.
- Best for skin contact. Silver is naturally antimicrobial and far less likely to irritate than nickel. For heart-rate sensors, ECG-style electrodes, or anything worn against the body, soft non-wovens like Shieldex® Bern are made for exactly this.
- It stretches. Our Silver Woven Stretch fabric keeps conducting while it flexes — perfect for glove fingertips and anything that moves with the body.
Watch out for: silver tarnishes with light exposure and reacts badly to poor water quality (sulphur and low pH are the enemies). Store it wrapped, and test-wash a small swatch before laundering a finished piece.

Copper conductive fabric: the reliable workhorse
Copper (usually a copper-nickel blend) is the do-everything middle ground.
Why choose copper:
- Great conductivity per dollar. Copper-Nickel woven fabric is easy to cut, sew, and iron-bond, and starts at sample sizes so you can experiment cheaply.
- Excellent for EMI/RF shielding. If you're lining a pouch or enclosure to block signals, copper blends do the job beautifully.
- Easy to work with. Medium-weight wovens cut cleanly without fraying into a mess, and pair well with double-sided bonding interfacing for precise placement before sewing.
Watch out for: copper discolours over time, especially outdoors — it still conducts, but the patina is real. Not ideal directly against skin for long periods.
Nickel conductive fabric: structure and durability
Nickel-finished ripstop fabrics are the structured option.
Why choose nickel:
- Holds its shape. Nickel ripstop is firmer and flatter — great for fabric buttons, switches, and battery holders where you don't want floppiness.
- Durable surface. Ripstop construction resists tearing and handles repeated presses well.
- Distinctive look. The diamond and square patterns are honestly quite pretty in a visible design.
Watch out for: nickel allergies are common. Don't put nickel fabric directly against skin without testing first, or keep it to short wear periods.
